The Subaru Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is no ordinary automatic transmission. It behaves as if it had an infinite number of gear ratios, because it changes from ratio to ratio without intermediate steps. In the late 15th century, Leonardo Da Vinci conceptualized CVT, and Subaru introduced it on the Justy in the late 1980s. Now, the modern Lineartronic CVT is available on all recent Subaru models. The CVT is more efficient, which means you'll save at the pump when you choose a Subaru equipped with the CVT system.

If you ever want to have control over the gears, the Lineartronic CVT system lets you do that. Just switch to manual mode, and use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel to select one of six programmed speeds. In many vehicles with automatic transmissions, you can feel the gears changing.
