Subaru Loves Pluto - Kendall E

If you saw Pluto now, you wouldn’t ever believe that the happy, wiggly, 5-year-old Boxer who was running laps around you and stopping only for ear scratches was once in so much pain that he could barely move on his own. Before coming to Foothills Animal Shelter, Pluto was unfortunately struck by a car and suffered significant injuries. He was unable to bear any weight on his left back leg due to a torn ligament and his front right leg bone was seriously fractured as well. In addition, his left eye was also severely damaged. It was clear that Pluto had a very long way to go if he was ever going to be able to walk and move freely again. Our dedicated shelter veterinary team determined that Pluto needed aggressive surgical intervention in order to heal the tears and fractures that were preventing him from being able to walk normally. They also determined that his eye was beyond repair and that he would need additional surgery to remove it. In order to give Pluto the best chance possible, he would need to undergo multiple surgeries with ample time in between to allow him to heal properly. While some of the surgeries could be performed at the shelter by our veterinary team, others would need to be done off-site by a local orthopedics surgeon. Because of his injuries to more than one leg, the typical approach - which would have been amputation of the injured limb - was not an option, which means that both legs would require intensive surgery and recovery. Despite all of this, our veterinary team, our shelter staff and volunteers, and Pluto never gave up hope. In between surgeries, Pluto alternated his recovery time between a loving foster home and the shelter, stealing the hearts of staff and volunteers alike. And after every surgery, Pluto’s future started to look brighter and brighter. After multiple surgeries, dozens of vet appointments, and countless belly rubs, Pluto was finally able to walk pain-free. Although he will always have a strange gait to his movements and he had to have one of his eyes removed, Pluto doesn’t let that stop him from running, playing, and loving everyone he meets. Finally, four months after he was brought to the shelter, Pluto was placed up for adoption and his adoption fee was even sponsored by one of our staff members. Thankfully, his new family was quick to find him and bring him home - missing eye and all. Stories like Pluto’s can be difficult but it is always worth it to help our incredible underdogs live the lives that they deserve. Thanks to the generous support from AutoNation Subaru West, we were able to give Pluto the help that he needed in order to live his best life - pain-free and happy.

Pup Up Market - BRIAN M

The 2022 Pup Up Market was a huge success. With support from event sponsors, like AutoNation Subaru West, ticket sales, and donations, we raised $41,000 to help the more than 7,500 animals seen at Foothills Animal Shelter each year. Between 500-600 people attended the event and enjoyed shopping from 28 local vendors, sampling beer from three breweries, and listening to live music, all to help make life better for people and pets helped at the Shelter. In addition, we adopted 43 animals into new, loving homes with the weekend adoption special.

Above and Beyond - Thank You! - Lisa M

Thank you so much to AutoNation Subaru West for stepping up to the plate in our time of need. Brian Murphy, General Manager of AutoNation, worked with us during Subaru Loves Learning and adopted our classrooms. I pulled Brian aside and told him that while we appreciate the donation of school supplies, we needed help here in Lakewood on food insecurity for our students. Brian took this information back to the dealership and came back with his team. They not only donated snacks for our students, but Brian donated a picnic table for us to use for outdoor activities. Even further, Brian contacted Subaru of America and came back 2 months later with a team that donated $500 worth of food to our in-school food pantry. I cannot express how much this means to us and how a donation like this genuinely makes such a difference in the community of Lakewood. Thank you again for going above and beyond the call of duty!

Above and Beyond - Thank You!

Subaru Loves Rodger - Kendall E

Foothills Animal Shelter is incredibly honored to be supported by AutoNation Subaru West through their annual Subaru Loves Pets Campaign. For every dog or cat adopted throughout the month of October, Subaru donated $100 to our organization. This year, we are thankful to receive $3,100 towards our life-saving efforts. Our shelter is dedicated to providing the best possible care for every animal that comes through our doors. Animals just like Rodger, a 5-year-old Doberman, who came to us needing some extra love and a second chance. Before going up for adoption, Rodger, just like all animals in our care, received a medical exam, behavioral evaluation, his vaccinations, a neuter surgery, and of course – lots of snuggles and treats. After our healthcare team performed Rodger’s neuter surgery – which is typically a very simple procedure - he began experiencing excessive and prolonged bleeding. We were thankfully able to stabilize him, and discovered Rodger was suffering from a rare and life-threatening bleeding disorder called von Willebrand’s Disease. While there is no cure for von Willebrand's disease, Rodger was treated with blood transfusions throughout his recovery, and quickly bounced back to his goofy, sweet self. Rodger was just one of the lucky dogs adopted during the Subaru Loves Pets Campaign, and with the help of AutoNation’s Subaru West’s support, he will live a long, happy life with his new family. Subaru loves pets, and Foothills loves Subaru!

Foothills Animal Shelter - 50K Raised! - Elyse L

We'd like to take a moment and thank AutoNation Subaru West for their partnership with us. This year, we celebrated our 10 year anniversary in style. I’m happy to say that the month-long celebration ended up raising more than $50,000 for our homeless pets, and we truly couldn’t have accomplished this without AutoNation's support! Specifically, this dealership loaned us cars to deliver bags of happiness to homeless pets that Foothills cares for each year.

10th Annual Denver Golfers Against Cancer Event Raises $125k

Funding research for a cure

The 10th Annual Denver Golfers Against Cancer (GAC) event held on July 29th and 30th was a huge success!  The event kicked off Sunday night with the Gala at Pinehurst Country Club.  The GAC Gala crowd enjoyed a fun night of entertainment with Steve Azar and Gary Valentine along with a silent and live auction that featured some great items.  GAC also honored 17 year old Grace Caroline Pettroff who was diagnosed with brain cancer. Grace shared her story inspiring story to everyone in attendance.

The Gala was followed by the AutoNation Subaru Golf Tournament the morning of July 30th at Pinehurst Country Club. Jeff Farley, a member of the Cobra long drive team, held a long drive demo on the range prior to the tournament. It was a beautiful day for golf and the participants in the sold out tournament had a great time.

Massaro Images took pictures during the Gala and Golf Tournament and you can view Gala photos by clicking here or Golf Tournament by clicking here.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and the participants, a total of $125,000 was raised for cancer research. The GAC Board met with cancer researchers on September 6th and listened to five proposals. The Board selected 3 projects to fund with the $125,000 from this year's event. The first project is focused on treatment of Aggressive Prostate Cancer, the second project is focused on a Metabolic Therapy for preventing Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Expansion, the final project is researching a new approach to treating diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) and aggressive brain tumors in children that are almost uniformly fatal. With this year's donation, Denver Golfers Against Cancer has contributed over $1 million locally to help fund cancer research and these funds have generated over $8,500,000 in additional grants for the projects supported. Two different projects funded in 2010 and 2015 have gone on to clinical trial.

The 11th Annual event which will be held the July 28th and 29th, 2019 at Pinehurst Country Club. Please mark your calendars now to attend the great event. We are looking for additional volunteers and board members so if you would like to play a part in this great charity and event please contact us at gacdenver@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars for the Subaru Share the Love event that runs from late November to the first of January.  Autonation Subaru West has selected Golfers Against Cancer as their local charity and when someone buys a new Subaru during Share the Love, they can select GAC as their charity and GAC will receive $250.  Last year GAC received over $51,000 from the Share the Love Event.

GAC is a national organization founded in 1997 by a group of Houston golfers who lost two close friends to cancer. Motivated to raise money for cancer research, they created an annual golf tournament with a live and silent auction, with proceeds going to fund grants for local cancer researchers. Nine years ago Denverite Scott Pearson established the Denver Chapter after having three family members diagnosed with different cancers.  Golfers Against Cancer is unique in that it funds research projects that are in the early stages of development and would not normally qualify for federal funding. Currently, there are multiple GAC chapters throughout the US and since its inception, GAC has raised over $24 million nationwide to fund cancer research.

Please visit our website for more information on the organization and make sure to follow us on Facebook to stay up to date with Denver GAC.
